“Pray without ceasing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (ESV)
It’s easy for me to read a verse like that and feel a little inadequate: compared to praying ALL THE TIME, my current level of prayer is pretty lacking. And how is it even possible to be praying all the time and never stop?
Then I read a passage like Psalm 139, and things start making more sense:
“You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, even there Your hand will lead me.” Psalm 139:2, 7-10 (NIV)
According to these verses, God is present with me no matter where I am. He is constantly walking with me and He can hear every thought as I think it. So from God’s perspective, my every thought can be considered a prayer as long as I include Him in it.
Imagine if you had a good friend visiting from out of town and they followed you around for a day. As you drove to work, you’d be talking with them the whole way. Throughout the day, you’d be including them in conversations and remarking on things as they happened. You’d ask their opinion on things and tell them how you were feeling.
It should be that way with God! Prayer can be a special time set aside to talk to God about specific things, but it should also be a constant conversation where we include Him on all of our thoughts and feelings throughout the day.
The times that I find myself constantly praying (literally without stopping) are the times when I feel out of my depth and I know I need His constant help and grace. In other words, the amount of time that I spend in constant, unceasing prayer is directly proportional to my awareness of my need for Him.
God, I confess that without Your grace I cannot have joy or success today. I invite You into every thought and emotion. Help me have a constant awareness of You and an unceasing mindset of prayer all day long in every moment.
